Who here is a Digital DJ?

Postby colly on Wed Aug 15, 2007 7:11 pm

So how many of you have a Digital DJ Setup? A few years ago Digital Dj'ing was seen as a bit of a joke and as "Cheating" by most DJ's I met anyway... Now things have changed a lot and many people are moving over to digital for various reasons. Many because the cost of buying vinyl is ridiculous and they are cumbersome to transport to gigs etc. With the Pioneer CDJ's coming industry standard, all you need is your book or CD's - or perhaps just two if you use mp3's.

Even some hip hop and scratch DJ's are using Digital Vinyl systems like Serato Scratch Live, and M-Audio Torq, and all the other companies are coming out with their versions like Traktor Scratch and Virtual DJ etc.

There are also the fully digital solutions like the M-Audio Torq Xponent and the Vestax VCI-100.

So what do you think, and what do you perfer?

Started out being a digital dj with the bcd2000. Great for learning and I soon added turntables to my setup and now I use a dvs. I'l post pics later on.

I'm new to this DJ stuff and yes I am digital. I am using the Behringer BCD 3000 with Traktor LE running on my
HP laptop.

The main reason I went digital was cost! Seeing as I am new I wanted to have a go without spending a fortune and the BCD 3000
is a very low cost approach (€220 on Thomann.de)! You can't beat that.

Anyway I am still learning how to use the BCD 3000 and Traktor so I am not able to say any more right now.

in my opinion djing is not in your hands: its in your heart

true djs carry vinyl and cds and don't complain... if it's too heavy, they get a trolley

i'm not against digital stuff: speacially now that i'm starting to use ssl-1 but i'll still carry my vinyl and my cds

: )

p.s. - old school here, sorry...

Hi guys. I'm a long time vinyl veteran, DJing since the late 80's off vinyl, and never really bought into CD mixing until about 2 years ago. They simply don't sound as good or handle the same. But using CDJ1000s opens your mind to the benefits. Yes vinyl prices was one reason for the switch but really the bigger availability of tunes online and wanting to play out home-made music & mixes meant that cutting an acetate was both time consuming and a rip off. Depending on the gig I'm playing I'll choose vinyl or CDs, or usually a combinaion of both.
From late last year I invested in an Apple Macbook Pro and am now playing live sets with Ableton Live, tho have used Traktor for corporate events as it can be automated. Ableton allows me to remix music live and perform original & other people's music in ways turntables or CDJs cannot ever possibly. I'm still in the early stages of the possibilities of that program, so watch ths space. I guess eventually I'm moving towards a total digital format with my performances and music, but with over 10,000 records I'll still cherish the chance to play off vinyl - when the oppurtunity allows.

said it in a couple posts before... dj that is dj plays vinyl...

i love my cdjs and the way i set up loops in them and they never get away... play with 3 or 4 it's really really fun...

but the feel of the plastic, the needle, the sound... it can't be compared...

you don't learn how to be a dj, you were born dj

i'm not saying you're not a dj if you don't appreciate this kind of stuff - just feel sorry cos there are no words to explain receiving a square package with 4 or 5 vinyl inside.. open and run to the turntables... listen to the tracks and set up your markers... bag your favorites for later on tonight...

lights go off, they want to open the door and the manage screams: can i get some music here please ?

and the moment you put the needle on the record and listen to the cracking followed by the first beat...

THAT feeling...
